Eating our way around New York!

A last minute girls’ trip to the Big Apple in November saw us take in some epic sight-seeing, shop til-we-drop-shopping and many brilliant eateries.

Here are my top-tips for every meal of the day, up and down Manhattan.

Bagels Schmear – Address116 E 28th St, New York, NY 10016, USA

Best Bagels in the East-Side, this local favourite has queues out the door for its cream cheese everything bagel. No space to eat in, but worth waiting in line, this is a no-frills New York institution and if you love bagels as much as us, the place to come to get the true New York bagel experience!

Brunch / Lunch

Penelope – Address159 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10016, USA

American favourites in a modern chic setting, this is a popular joint and rightly so. For all your pancake, waffles and bacon wants, this is the place to come to fill your boots with some American classics.

Pershing Square – Address90 E 42nd St, New York, NY 10017, USA

Not the most upmarket restaurant we visited, but Pershing Square can’t be beaten on location. It can be found under Grand Central’s Park Avenue viaduct and makes for a great jumping off point to explore the station and surrounding areas. Big, hearty American-style breakfast and as much filter coffee as you can drink – you won’t need lunch after starting the day here!

The Butcher’s Daughter –Address19 Kenmare St, New York, NY 10012, USA

For something a bit more trendy – head to the Nolita area for brunch at this plant-based healthy eatery (perfect for a morning after the night before!) The smashed avocado and eggs benedict was a winner for us.

Afternoon pick-me-up

Magnolia Bakery – Address200 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10023, USA

This famed bakehouse serves up all manner of cakes and sweet stuff. One of several dotted around the city, we dived in here after a wander around Central Park for an autumnal pumpkin spiced latte and a slab of the peanut butter shortbread – delicious!

Sweet Moment – Address106 Mott St, New York, NY 10013, USA

For an overdose of cuteness with your cuppa joe, head to Sweet Moment in China Town for some more than instagramable drinks and deserts. These cute creations are the creamart choco, creamart red velvet and creamart matcha – almost… too good to drink, almost!

China Town’s cute coffees

Balthazar –Address80 Spring St, New York, NY 10012, USA

Ok, so this French brasserie has restaurants all over the world, including London (!) but after some shopping and in need of some refreshment, Balthazar provided a glamorous location for a tasty preprandial cocktail.

Red Rooster – Address310 Lenox Ave, New York, NY 10027, USA

The fried chicken to end all fried chicken. It comes whole. With a firework. Need I say more?! Ok, it is by celeb chef Marcus Samuelsson. Book a table – you won’t be disappointed.

Her Name is Han – Address17 E 31st St, New York, NY 10016, USA

A Chic Korean restaurant serving big plates with a family vibe and a beautiful setting – one of our favourite meals from the whole trip. If your taste buds need a break from American salt and sweet, New York has some fantastic Asian eateries and Her Name is Han satiated our need for some!

La Esquina – Address114 Kenmare St, New York, NY 10012, USA

A tasty Mexican eatery, this place is a great dinner spot – but it really comes into its own as an exclusive basement tequila bar. A brilliant DJ set saw us get our party started here and we only wished we had stayed longer. Book in for burritos and banging tunes.

Empire State (of mind!)
